September 29, 2013 : THE TRUST TEST

Dr.  Burnie R.  Burnside

Every one of us comes to a place where we ask a very simple question: Can I really trust God?  Can I trust God with my life?  Can I trust God with my future?  With my family?  With my job?  With my health?  Can I trust God with my possessions?  I think every one of us comes to the place where we have to cross a line of either saying, "Yes, I do trust Him," or staying back and saying, "No."

It's at that “Trust Test” line that we either grow spiritually by crossing it and saying," Yes, I'm going to trust God," or we back away from that line and begin to shrivel in our soul and never reach our potential as a child of God.  All because we were unwilling to let God take control of our life.

RECOGNIZE GOD AS YOUR SOURCE: "But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today" (Deut.  8:18).

The Who's in Charge Principle:

"The earth and everything that is in it belongs to the Lord. The world and its people belong to Him."  (Psalm 24:1)

God's the Owner- I'm the Manager

The Give and Grow Principle.  Practicing Stewardship Produces Growth.

The Do it Now Principle:  Stewardship Deals with our Present Resources.

The Fountain of Youth Principle.

We Live Forever Through Our Giving.

"We exist temporarily through what we take, but we live forever through what we give." Douglas M. Lawson

Jesus said that what we keep we lose, and what we lose we keep.

The Who's Number One? Principle:  Matthew 22:36-38

God Deserves The First of Everything.

Jesus was asked one time (Mat 22:36-38): "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" {37} Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' {38} This is the first and greatest commandment."

(Prov 3:9 NIV)  "Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;"

(1 Cor 16:2 NIV)  "On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made."

The Big Shovel Principle:

You cannot out-give God.

Listen to what Jesus said (Luke 6:38 NIV):  "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

The River Principle.

Our life is to be like a river, not a reservoir.

We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.

The Who Has Whom Principle:  Until God is in control of my life, I am out of control.

TEST GOD'S PROMISES: Bible Characters who passed the trust test.

Noah Genesis 7:6 (building of the ark)

Abraham Genesis 22:1-2 (sacrifice of Isaac)

Joshua Joshua 5:1 (crossing Jordan)

David I Samuel 17:37-39 (fighting Goliath)

One of the things that excites me about our church is we have a vision that is beyond the local church.  We're not here just for ourselves, sitting in the pew and kind of gumming ourselves to death until Jesus comes. We're reaching out to not only help ourselves to grow in our life, but to reach our community.  The vision is not for us alone. The vision is for the Kingdom of Christ.  Amen? And that's the only kind of vision that will last.
