October 20, 2013 : Priming the Pump of Faith

Dr.  Burnie R.  Burnside

Hebrews 11:1-6

While this is the desire of many Christians, they simply do not know how to "have faith."

Faith has three basic ingredients:

1.  An Object

2.  A Risk

3.  An Action

The Object of Faith Is The Person of Jesus Christ.

Faith is trust in someone or something based on a reasonable amount of evidence.

All that is in the Bible is not worth a nickel unless the Person behind this Book is trustworthy.

Faith rests upon the reliable and trustworthy character of God.

Not faith in a set of principles.

Not faith in theological positions.

Not faith in an ethical code.

Not upon an experience we have had.

Not upon how you may feel.

Faith is not knowing all the answers to all the questions about God.

Faith Is the Commitment and Decision Which Involves Risk.

Faith is always costly.

Faith risks the known, familiar present for the unknown future.

Heroes risk what they have to gain what God promises.

Obedience is the flip-side on the coin of faith.

The Third Essential Ingredient of Faith Is Action.

"Faith by itself, if not accompanied by action, is dead" (James 2:17).

Believing that Jesus is the light of the world will not bring light to your life.

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12).

How do I increase my faith?  Focus on Jesus.  Be willing to risk the unknown.  Follow through with specific action.  Are you doing what God would have you to do?
