October 27, 2013 : FAITH THAT DOESN’T “JUST SETTLE”

Dr.  Burnie R.  Burnside

Genesis 15:1-6

This is how faith really works.  We hear God’s call.  We set out to follow.  We have real victory.  We  leave behind old ways.  But we also find we don't arrive in our promised land overnight.  The journey is longer and more difficult than ever anticipated. And so we are tempted to “just settle.”

The Walk of Faith Has its Fears (vv. 1-2)

God appears to Abraham and His first words are “Fear not.”

There may have been a time in your life when you took a stand for God and later you wondered if you did the right thing.

God's call is to courage, and to Himself, “Do not be afraid ... I am your shield, your very great reward” (v. 1).

To be unwilling to allow any unrest or tension in life - to insist that life must maintain a steady level of comfort under every circumstance - is to miss the very purpose for which God allows difficulties into our lives.

God Does Not Allow Us to “Settle” for Anything less than Himself!

If God is our shield, whom should we fear? “God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Heb 13:5-6).

God was challenging Abraham to center his faith in relationship, and not in experiences or blessings.

God was saying, "Don't let your faith settle for a string of successes!”

God does not allow us to make substitutes for His promise!

THE TURNING POINT IS GOD HIMSELF (v. 6).

Faith Doesn't Settle - it Perseveres.

Abraham placed his faith in the adequacy of God.

God wants just such loyalty and perseverance from us.

God does not want us to settle for anything short of an intimate, trusting relationship with Him.
