February 23, 2014 : Communicating With God: How To Talk To God

Dr.  Burnie R.  Burnside

Matthew 6:31-32

THEME: Communicating with God # 3

Last week we looked at “How to Test the Voices You Hear” and we found that there are seven filters we can use to determine if the voices we hear are from God.

Two weeks ago we looked at “How To Recognize God’s Voice” and we found that God speaks through The Bible, through Fellow Believers and through Our Thoughts.

Three weeks ago we looked at “How To Listen To God’s Voice.” We must be like good soil if we are to be productive for God.

This week we are going to look at “How To Talk To God”.

“So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them” (Matthew 6:31-32).

Talk to God about your DAILY LIFE.

God is concerned about every detail in my life.

Jesus instructs us to pray for these things when He said, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11).

God expects us to pray for our basic needs and we are to pray daily for them.

God does not expect us to panic about life. He expects us to pray about our lives.

Talk to Him about SPECIFIC CONCERNS.

When you’re looking for a specific thing - make a specific request.

“Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. 9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:5-9).

Prayer has never been a lopsided conversation. Prayer is not a wish list.

"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9).

Talk to Him about SPIRITUAL WISDOM.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

“If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help” (James 1:5 MSG).

God wants to help us. He wants to give us wisdom and the Bible tells us we need to ask for it.

Talk to Him in FAITH.

God wants you to talk to Him but you need to do it in faith.

“But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind” (James 1:6 NASB).

“Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him”  (Hebrews 11:6).
