March 2, 2014 : Communicating With God: How To Be Receptive To God’s Voice

Dr.  Burnie R.  Burnside

Habakkuk 2:1-2

THEME: Communicating with God # 4

In this series we have looked at:

“How to Listen To God’s Voice,”

“How To Recognize God’s Voice,”

“How To Test the Voices You Hear” and

“How To Talk to God.”

“How To Be Receptive To God’s Voice.”

In the book of Habakkuk he prays a series of three prayers In chapter two we see what Habakkuk does after he prays. From this passage we can learn five important aspects of how to be receptive to God’s voice.

“I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. Then the Lord replied:

“Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it” (Habakkuk 2:1-2).

STAND at the guard post.

You must be looking to receive. You are to be observant. You will not receive if you don’t see.

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you”  (Luke 11:9).

His will is involved. His volition is activated. He was determined to actively listen to what God had to say.

STATION yourself at the lookout tower.

To “STATION” yourself speaks of perseverance.

“So I say to you, keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you” Luke 11:9 (HCSB).

The reason many of us don’t hear God is because we are too busy.

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10).

"Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God" Psalms 46:10 (MSG).

Hurry is the death of prayer. If you want to hear God you have to become quiet. Focus is the key.

WATCH to see what He will say.

Usually when we talk about communication we talk about listening and hearing. But this verse talks about watching and seeing.

God has made us people who can hear - but He also wants us to see.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints” Ephesians 1:18 (HCSB).

WRITE down the vision.

Record the insights that you receive so he can have a record of what took place and of what God said.

“This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me” 1 Corinthians 11:24 (HCSB).

In our church we partake of the Lord’s Supper once a month - so we don’t forget and so we will remember.

CLARIFY what you have heard.

God instructed Habakkuk to clearly write it down.

God wants us to clearly proclaim his word.

To clarify is to come to understand. Once we understand we can apply and when we apply God’s Word we become Doers of God’s Word.

"Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear!" James 1:22 (MSG)

Here are five practical ways to be receptive to God's Voice.

1. Stand at the guard post.

2. Station yourself at the lookout tower.

3. Watch to see what God will say.

4. Write down what you hear.

5. Clarify what you have heard.
