August 24, 2014 | The Valley of Decision

Dr.  Burnie R.  Burnside

Joshua 8:1-35

The children of Israel are in the process of claiming their Promised Land. But their biggest challenge is that people already live there, and they do not recognize Israel’s God. God has given Israel claim to this land, but they have to drive these people out of it one city at a time.

God’s methods change, but His character and nature do not.

  1. What is important is not HOW God works, but THAT He works. We want to see Him move and work, Amen?

‟I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Corinthians 9:22).

  2. Jesus opened blinded eyes...but in different ways.

He forgives sin (7:26b).

  1. In God’s economy, failure is not final... He’s a God of the second chance!
  3. God longs to forgive and forget, but we must first turn to Him in confession and repentance.

“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning....” (Lamentations 3:22-23a).

He judges sin (v. 24-26).

  1. There is a stark contrast between those who repent of sin and those who do not.
  3. The God of love is the God of wrath. If you reject His forgiveness you will face His wrath!

God lets us choose (vv. 30-35).

  1. He allows us to choose whether we want to be blessed or cursed... Pardoned or punished. Forgiven or judged!
  3. Deuteronomy 28:3
  4. “You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.”
  5. Then All the people shall say “Amen.”
  7. Deuteronomy 27:15
  8. “Cursed is anyone who makes an idol - a thing detestable to the LORD, the work of skilled hands and sets it up in secret.”
  9. Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
  11. Deuteronomy 28:4
  12. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock - the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.”
  13.  Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
  15. Deuteronomy 27:16
  16. “Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother.
  17. Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
  19. Deuteronomy 28:6
  20. “You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.”
  21. Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
  23. Deuteronomy 27:19
  24. “Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.”
  25. Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
  27. Deuteronomy 28:7
  28. “The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.”
  29. Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
  31. Joshua sets up an altar in the valley and says, you can have blessings or curses, it’s your choice...what will YOU say Amen to?
  33. Joel 3:14 - “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.”

You can be on the mountain of mercy or the mountain of misery. Pardon or punishment. You WILL make a decision about this today. What is your decision?
