Joshua 14:1-12

Life is all about climbing mountains.  Caleb had picked out this mountain 45 years ago, and he hasn’t forgotten about it.  In Joshua 14, Caleb is now about to take possession of it.  He claimed it by faith even though he wouldn’t take possession of it for some time.

Caleb’s Surrender.

  1. Caleb held back nothing. He gave all that he was to all that God is.
  3. “I ... followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly” (v. 8b).

“The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly” (v. 9b).

“So Hebron has belonged to Caleb ... ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly” (v. 14b).

  4. Surrender is the calling for all Christians!  Jesus was a dying sacrifice and He calls us to be a living sacrifice!

Caleb’s Strength.

  1. “I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then” (v. 11).
  3. “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me” (v. 6b)

“Just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old” (v. 10)!

“Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said” (v. 12).
  5. Caleb’s strength was in the Word of God.

Caleb’s Struggle.

  1. Nothing great happens absent of struggle. There can be no victory without a battle.
  3. The door of opportunity swings on the hinges of opposition.
  5. The play-it-safe doubters will always be there...ignore them!

“Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them” (Numbers 14:9).

God knows that the struggle you are in for the present will make you stronger for the future! Allow Him to stretch you and exercise your faith.  Our God loves us just as we are, but He loves us so much He doesn’t want us to stay the way we are. He wants us to grow and He knows that with no pain there is no gain.

Jesus said, “if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

(Matthew 17:20).
