Sermon Notes

October 26, 2014 | To Follow Jesus or Not (SERIES: When Jesus Is Not Who You Think - Part 4)

Dr.  Burnie R.  Burnside

Mark 10:17-22

Pilate asked an important question: “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”  Another young man had a face-to-face with Christ and faced the same question.  This is the tragic account of one who stood at the crossroads of life, and made the wrong decision.

He was so Rich, and yet so Poor:

  1. He had great wealth (v. 22).

  2. However, from a spiritual perspective, he was poor.

He was so Good and yet so Bad.

  1. He was a moral, upright person who had kept the commandments.
  3. Our own goodness is not enough in the sight of God.  All our own righteousness is like filthy rags in God’s sight.
  5. Righteousness is not something negative - it is something positive.
    1. “Love  the Lord your God  with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind,  and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).
    3. “Love your neighbor  as yourself”  (Mark 12:31).
  7. The young man had an idol in his heart.  He loved his wealth more than Jesus and others.

He was so Wise and yet so Foolish.

  1. Wise people know where to go for the right answers to their questions.
  3. The most foolish thing a person can do in life is to reject Jesus - who is the way, the truth and the Life.
  5. The truth is not so much that Christ gives the answer to our questions - He is the answer.

He was so Near and yet so Far.

  1. He came close to Jesus; there was geographical proximity, but no spiritual relationship.
  3. Many today are so close to Jesus, but still have not surrendered their lives  to Him.

The tragedy in life is to come face-to-face with Jesus and then turn your back on Him.
