Follow Me … Make Disciples
Matthew 28:18-20
Dr. Burnie R. Burnside
Imagine the advantage if every-one in our church operated on the basis of the same mission, purpose and goals.
- Feeling of WINNING
- KEEPING SCORE
- BE A DISCIPLE (a follower of Jesus) ... and BE A DISCIPLE-MAKER.
"The Church" is a Gathering of Followers - Disciples.
- One who decides to walk WITH Jesus as their Savior and Lord.
- One who intentionally acts like Jesus.
- One who learns to use his/her spiritual gifts to serve others.
- One who seeks to help others to become followers of Jesus.
The Business of the Church is to Make Disciples
- To bring people to Christ - to EVANGELIZE.
- To teach believers to obey Jesus - to EDIFY.
- "To prepare God’s people to do works of service" - to EQUIP.
- To involve people in ministry - to EMPLOY.
Dimensions of Disciple-Making
- DELIVERANCE: conversion through evangelism.
- DEVELOPMENT: training and equipping (Eph. 4:11-12).
- DEPLOYMENT: moving out into mission.
Think Steps to Discipleship, Not Programs
- Don’t mistake activity for disciple-making.
- The Goal is to move someone from where they are to the next step in their spiritual journey.
A Disciple’s Involvement
- Participate in Worship
- Participate in a Small Group
- Participate in a Ministry Team
This One Thing We Do: Discipleship
- Discipleship is about Focus, not Size of the church.
- Narrowing the focus is the way to fulfilling the mission of Christ.
- Ministry becomes diluted and mediocre when it is flowing in too many directions.
- We may have to do less if we want to grow more.
Making disciples is Jesus’ plan for building healthy churches and His strategy for reaching the world Be a Disciple – Follow Jesus. Make Disciples – Lead Others to Jesus.
